Sudanese Parenting and Family Support Program
The Sudanese Parenting and Family Support Project is a project funded by the Australian Government Department of Family and Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FACSIA) through the Local Answers Initiative (round 2). The project targets parents within the Sudanese community in the Northern Region of Melbourne with the aim of enhancing their parenting skills and building opportunities and skills for economic self-reliance.
The project aims to empower newly arrived parents from Sudan to become resilient in facing challenges of starting a new life in a new cultural, social and educational environment.
The project will enhance knowledge and a better understanding of the Australian workplace culture and labour market and the Australian social and cultural values and parenting practices and child rearing as well as disciplining children in positive and constructive ways.
The project consists of two 15-week programs (one targeting young mothers and another for fathers) and combining workplace ready training, work placement, parenting workshops and home visits by a parenting educator.
The main objectives of the project are:
- Improve the parenting skills of young parents from the Sudanese community in the Northern Metropolitan region.
- Enhance knowledge of the Australian workplace environment including:
- Enhance knowledge and develop a better understanding of the Australian work place culture and labour market by participating parents
- Creating educational and training opportunities combined with work placement of participants for the aim of improving employment prospects of participants
